Bonnie Prince Charlies Cave

Druimindarroch - Bonnie Prince Charlie's Cave (1 hour)

This walk is an excellent choice for the whole family as it combines multiple beach combing opportunities, fabulous views and the added extra of exploring Bonnie Prince Charlie's cave!

Following the Jacobite defeat at Culloden in 1746, the Young Pretender, or more officially, Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Sylvester Severino Maria Stuart (!), fled west where for months on end he took refuge in several caves across the western Highlands and Islands. Finally, on 19th September 1746, after hiding out in the cave at Borrodale beach near Arisaig, two French boats dropped anchor on Loch nan Uamh and Bonnie Prince Charlie and his party set sail for France. He never returned to Scotland:

1) Parking at the top of the hill at Druimindarroch, just off the A830, head down the single track road, over the cattle-grid to the boatshed at the foot of the hill.

2) From the boatshed, head out across the bay to the peninsula on the other side (wellies would be a good idea). We'd recommend turning right and exploring the peninsula, but to get to the cave, turn left and follow the well-trodden track which leads to Borrodale beach and Charlie's cave.

3) Once the shingle beach is in sight, look out for a path to your left, which leads to the cave entrance by a large oak tree. You can enter the cave and go down into the inner chamber so do remember to take a torch.

4) After exploring the cave, make your way down to Borrodale beach, where you can head through the gate, crossing the fields where you'll pass below glorious Arisaig House.

5) Once you've crossed the fields, you'll go through another gate and over a rickety wooden bridge by Borrodale House. From here, join the A830 and make your way back up to your car.
